A digital clamp meter (clamp-on ammeter) is an electrical tester that combines a voltmeter with a clamp type current meter and can measures electrical current without the need to disconnect the wiring through which the current is flowing (that is possible because the magnetic field produced by a wire is proportional to the electric current passing through it).
Clamp meters are current-measuring tools with some voltage abilities - depending on the model, a clamp-on meter will alow you to measure DC voltage, AC voltage, AC and DC current, resistance, capacitance, frequency and temperature. Some ammeters can also provide a true RMS current measurement of non-sinusoidal or distorted AC waveforms.
